The Chapter of the Universal Gate of Bodhisattva Kwanseum (Avalokiteshvara)

 

爾時 無盡意菩薩 卽從座起 偏袒右肩 合掌向佛 而作是言 世尊 觀世音菩薩 以何因緣 名觀世音

그때, 끊이지 않는 뜻을 가진, 무진의(無盡意)보살이 자리에서 일어나, 오른쪽 어깨를 벗어 드러내어 존경의 뜻을 나타내며, 부처님을 향하여 합장하고 다음과 같이 여쭈었습니다.

“세존이시여, 관세음(觀世音)보살은 무슨 사연으로 관세음이라는 이름이 붙여지게 되었나이까?”

At that time the bodhisattva Inexhaustible Intent immediately rose from his seat, bared his right shoulder, pressed his palms together and, facing the Buddha, spoke these words: "World Honored One, this Bodhisattva Perceiver of the World's Sounds-- why is he called Perceiver of the World's Sounds?"

 

佛告無盡意菩薩 善男子 若有無量百千萬億衆生 受諸苦惱 聞是觀世音菩薩 一心稱名觀世音菩薩 卽是 觀其音聲 皆得解脫

부처님께서 무진의 보살에게 말씀하셨습니다.

“소질이 훌륭한 남자여, 만일 한량없는 백 천 만억의 중생이, 여러 가지 고뇌(苦惱)를 받을지라도, 이 관세음보살의 공덕이 위대함을 듣고 일심으로 그 이름을 일컫는다면, 관세음보살은 곧 그 음성을 듣고 그 실상을 뚜렷이 꿰뚫어보아, 그들을 괴로움에서 벗어나게 해주기 때문에 관세음이라 이름하였느니라.

The Buddha said to Bodhisattva Inexhaustible Intent: "Good man, suppose there are immeasurable hundreds, thousands, ten thousands, millions of living beings who are undergoing various trials and suffering. If they hear of this Bodhisattva Perceiver of the Word's Sounds and single-mindedly call his name, then at once he will perceive the sound of their voices and they will all gain deliverance from their trials.

 

若有持是 觀世音菩薩名者 設入大火 火不能燒 由是菩薩 威神力故

만일 어떤 이가 이 관세음보살의 이름을 마음에 굳게 간직한다면, 가령 큰 불 속에 들어가더라도 불이 그를 태우지 못할 것이니, 그것은 이 관세음보살이 가지고 있는 높고 큰 감화력과 신통력 때문이니라.

If someone, holding fast to the name of bodhisattva perceiver of the world's sounds, should enter a great fire, the fire could not burn him. This would come about because of this bodhisattva's authority and supernatural power.

 

若爲大水所漂 稱其名號 卽得淺處

또 큰물에 떠내려갈지라도 이 보살의 이름을 부르면, 자연히 얕은 곳으로 흘러가 닿을 것이며,

If one were washed away by a great flood and call upon his name, one would immediately find himself in a shallow place.

 

若有百千萬億衆生 爲求 金銀 瑠璃 硨磲 瑪瑙 珊瑚 琥珀 眞珠 等寶 入於大海 假使黑風 吹其船舫 飄墮羅刹鬼國 其中 若有乃至一人 稱觀世音菩薩名者 是諸人等 皆得解脫羅刹之難 以是因緣 名觀世音

혹은 백 천 만억의 중생이 금 은 청보석 자거 마노 산호 호박 진주 등의 보배를 구하기 위하여, 큰 바다에 들어갔을 때 갑자기 폭풍이 불어, 배가 악귀인 나찰들의 나라에 표류하였다고 하자. 이와 같은 위기의 순간에 만약 배에 타고 있는 사람들 가운데, 한 사람이 관세음보살의 이름을 부른다면, 이 사람들은 나찰에게 속아 넘어가는 어려움에서 벗어날 수 있으리니, 이러한 이유에서 관세음이라 이름지어졌느니라.

"Suppose there were a hundred, a thousand, ten thousand, a million living beings who, seeking for gold, silver, lapis lazuli, seashell, agate, coral, amber, pearls, and other treasures, set out on the great sea. and suppose a fierce wind should blow their ship off course and it drifted to the land of raksasas demons. If among those people there is even just one who calls the name of Bodhisattva Perceiver of the World's Sounds, then all those people will be delivered from their troubles with the raksasas. This is why he is called Perceiver of the World's Sounds.

 

若復有人 臨當被害 稱觀世音菩薩名者 彼所執刀杖 尋段段壞 以得解脫

만일, 또 어떤 사람이 다른 사람들로부터 칼이나 막대기로 해를 당하게 되었을지라도, 관세음보살의 이름을 부른다면, 그들이 가진 칼이나 막대기가 조각조각 부러져, 그 난으로부터 벗어날 수 있으며,

"If a person who faces imminent threat of attack should call the name of Bodhisattva Perceiver of the World's sounds, then the swords and staves wielded by his attackers would instantly shatter into so many pieces and he would be delivered.

 

若三千大千國土 滿中夜叉羅刹 欲來惱人 聞其稱觀世音菩薩名者 是諸惡鬼 尙不能以惡眼視之 況復加害

혹은 이 삼천대천 국토에 가득한 야차와 나찰 등의 악귀들이 사람들을 괴롭히려고 오더라도 관세음보살의 이름을 부르면, 들러붙어 보자는 사악한 생각을 가지고 사람들을 대할 수 없을뿐더러, 더욱이 실제로 해칠 수 없을 것이니라.

Though enough yakshas and raksasas to fill all the thousand-million-fold world should try to come and torment a person, if they hear him calling the name of Bodhisattva Perceiver of the World's Sounds, then these evil demons will not even be able to look at him with their evil eyes, much less do him harm.

 

設復有人 若有罪 若無罪 杻械枷鎖 檢繫其身 稱觀世音菩薩名者 皆悉斷壞 卽得解脫

또 어떤 사람이 죄를 지었거나, 혹은 무고한 죄로 말미암아 손발에 쇠고랑이 채워지고 몸이 사슬로 묶였을지라도 관세음보살의 이름을 부르면, 몸을 구속하고 있는 그러한 것들은 모두 산산이 부서지고 끊어져, 즉시 자유의 몸이 될 수 있느니라.

If someone, be guilty or innocent, be bound in wooden or iron mannacles, chains or fetters, as soon as the name of Bodhisattva Perceiver of the World's Sounds is pronounced, then those mannacles, chains or fetters shall all be snapped and broken off and he shall be freed.

 

若三千大千國土 滿中怨賊 有一商主 將諸商人 齎持重寶 經過險路 其中一人 作是唱言 諸善男子 勿得恐怖 汝等應當 一心 稱觀世音菩薩名號 是菩薩 能以無畏 施於衆生 汝等 若稱名子 於此怨賊 當得解脫 衆商人聞 俱發聲言 南無觀世音菩薩 稱其名故 卽得解脫

만일 삼천대천 국토에 흉악한 도적 떼가 들끓고 있는데, 한 상인의 우두머리가 여러 상인을 이끌고 귀중한 보물을 가진 채 험한 길을 지나간다고 하자. 그때 그 중의 한 사람이 일행을 향하여, ‘여러 소질이 훌륭한 남자들이여, 무서워 말고 두려워하지 말라. 그대들은 모두 일심으로 관세음보살의 이름을 부를지니라. 이 보살은 두려움 모르는 마음을 중생에게 베풀어주는 분이므로 그대들도 이 보살의 이름을 부르면, 기필코 도적의 난으로부터 벗어날 수 있을 것이니라’ 고 말하니, 그 말에 따라 모든 상인들은 소리를 합하여, ‘나무관세음보살’ 하고 부르면, 그것은 일편단심 진리에 마음을 향하도록 하는 것이므로, 그들은 기필코 그 난으로부터 벗어날 수 있을 것이니라.

"Suppose, in a place filled with all the evil-hearted bandits of the thousand-million-fold world, there is a merchant leader who is guiding a band of merchants carrying valuable treasures over a steep and dangerous road, and that one man shouts out these words: 'Good men, do not be afraid! You must single-mindedly call on the name of Bodhisattva Perceiver of the World's Sounds. This bodhisattva can grant fearlessness to living beings. If you call his name, you will be delivered from these evil-hearted bandits!' When the band if merchants hear this, they all together raise their voices, saying, 'Hail to the Bodhisattva Perceiver of the World's Sounds!' And because they call his name, they are at once able to gain deliverance.

 

無盡意 觀世音菩薩摩訶薩 威神之力 巍巍如是

무진의여, 관세음보살의 높고 큰 감화력은 이외 같이 훌륭하느니라.

Inexhaustible Intent, the authority and supernatural power of the Bodhisattva and mahasattva Perceiver of the World's Sounds are as mighty as this!

 

若有衆生 多於淫慾 常念恭敬 觀世音菩薩 便得離慾 若多瞋恚 常念恭敬 觀世音菩薩 便得離瞋

若多愚癡 常念恭敬 觀世音菩薩 便得離痴 無盡意 觀世音菩薩 有如是等 大威神力 多所饒益 是故衆生 常應心念

만일 음욕으로 말미암아 번민하고 있는 중생이 있다면, 항상 관세음보살인 진리의 지혜를 생각[念]하고 공경하는 마음을 갖는다면, 자연히 그 음욕은 마음으로부터 멀리 떠나가 번민하는 것이 없어질 것이며, 또 무언가에 분함을 느껴 그 때문에 자기 자신을 괴롭히는 사람이 있다면, 항상 관세음보살을 생각하고 항상 공경하는 마음을 가지면, 기필코 그 성내는 버릇에서부터 벗어날 수 있을 것이며, 또 인간다운 지혜가 모자라서 어리석음이 가득 차 있는 사람이 있다면, 언제나 관세음보살의 지혜를 생각하고 공경하는 마음을 가지면, 기필코 그 어리석음에서 벗어날 수 있을 것이니라.

무진의여, 관세음보살은 이와 같이 위대한 감화력과 신통력을 가지고 모든 중생에게 큰 이익을 주느니라. 그런 까닭에 중생은 항상 관세음보살을 마음으로 생각하지 않으면 아니 되느니라.

"If there should be living beings beset by numerous lusts and cravings, let them think with constant reverence of Bodhisattva Perceiver of the World's Sounds and then they can shed their desires. If they have great wrath and ire, let them think with constant reverence of Bodhisattva Perceiver of the World's Sounds and then they can shed their ire. If they have great ignorance and stupidity, let them think with constant reverence of Bodhisattva Perceiver of the World's Sounds and they can rid themselves of stupidity.

"Inexhaustible Intent, the Bodhisattva Perceiver of the World's Sounds possesses great authority and supernatural powers, as I have described, and can confer many benefits. For this reason, living beings should constantly keep the thought of him in mind.

 

若有女人 設欲求男 禮拜供養 觀世音菩薩 便生福德智慧之男 設欲求女 便生端正有相之女 宿植德本 衆人愛敬 無盡意 觀世音菩薩 有如是力

만일 아들을 낳기 원하는 여인이 일심으로 관세음보살을 예배하고 공양한다면, 기필코 지혜와 복덕을 두루 갖춘 아들을 낳을 것이며, 만일 딸 낳기를 원한다면, 얼굴이 예쁜, 그리고 전생에 덕을 쌓은 과보에 의해 많은 사람들로부터 사랑받고 존경받는 관세음보살같이 훌륭한 딸을 낳을 것이니라.

무진의여, 관세음보살에게는 이와 같은 힘이 있어,

"If a woman wishes to give birth to a male child, she should offer obeisance and alms to Bodhisattva Perceiver of the World's Sounds and then she will bear a son blessed with merit, virtue, and wisdom. And if she wishes to bear a daughter, she will bear one with al the marks of comeliness, one who in the past planted the roots of virtue and is loved and respected by many persons.

"Inexhaustible Intent, the Bodhisattva Perceiver of the World's Sounds has power to do all this.

 

若有衆生 恭敬禮拜觀世音菩薩 福不唐捐 是故衆生 皆應受持觀世音菩薩名號

만일 중생이 관세음보살을 예배하고 공경한다면, 이익은 틀림없이 있을지니, 중생은 모두 관세음보살의 이름을 항상 마음속에 간직해야 하느니라.

If there are living beings who pay respect and obeisance to Bodhisattva Perceiver of the World's Sounds, their good fortune will not be fleeting or vain. Therefore living beings should all accept and uphold the name of Bodhisattva Perceiver of the World's Sounds.

 

無盡意 若有人 受持六十二億恒河沙菩薩名字 復盡形 恭養飮食衣服臥具醫藥 於汝意云何 是善男子善女人 功德多不 無盡意言 甚多 世尊

무진의여, 만일 어떤 사람이 육십 이억 갠지스강의 모래 같은 보살을 목숨이 다하도록 공경하는 생각을 간직한 채, 음식과 의복침구와 의약 등을 바쳐 공양하였다면, 그대의 생각은 어떠한가. 이렇게 공양한, 소질이 훌륭한 남녀가 받는 공덕은 과연 많겠는가, 적겠는가?“

무진의 보살이 대답하였습니다.

“매우 많다고 생각하옵나이다. 세존이시여.”

"Inexhaustible Intent, suppose there is a person who accepts and upholds the names of as many bodhisattvas as there are sands in sixty-two million Ganges, and for as long as his present body lasts, he offers them alms in the form of food and drink, clothing, bedding and medicines. What is your opinion? Would this good man or good woman gain many benefits or would he not?"

Inexhaustible Intent replied, "They would be very many, World-Honored One."

 

佛言 若復有人 受持觀世音菩薩名號 乃至一時 禮拜供養 是二人福 正等無異 於百千萬億劫 不可窮盡 無盡意 受持觀世音菩薩名號 得如是無量無邊福德之利

그러자 부처님께서 다시 말씀하시기를,

“그러나, 여기 어떤 사람이 있어 관세음보살에 대한 공경하는 마음을 마음에 굳게 간직하고, 잠깐만이라도 예배하고 공양하였다면, 이 두 사람이 받는 공덕은 완전히 서로 같아 조금도 다르지 아니하여, 그 공덕은 백 천 만억 겁에 걸쳐 설하더라도 다할 수 없을 만큼 넓고 큰 것이니라.

무진의여, 관세음보살에 대한 공경하는 생각을 굳게 간직하면, 이와 같이 한량없고 가이없는 복덕을 이익으로 받을 것이니라.

The Buddha said: "Suppose also that there is a person who accepts and upholds the name of Bodhisattva Perceiver of the World's Sounds and even just once offers him obeisance and alms. The good fortune pained by these two persons would be exactly equal and without difference. For a hundred, a thousand, ten thousand, a million kalpas it would never be exhausted or run out. Inexhaustible Intent, if one accepts and upholds the name of Bodhisattva Perceiver of the World's Sounds, he will gain the benefit of merit and virtue that is as immeasurable and boundless as this!"

 

無盡意菩薩 白佛言 世尊 觀世音菩薩 云何遊此沙婆世界 云何而爲 衆生說法 方便之力 其事云何

그러자, 무진의보살이 부처님께 여쭈었습니다.

“세존이시여, 관세음보살은 어떠한 모습으로 이 사바세계에 자유자재로 출현하시고, 또 어떤 모양으로 중생을 위하여 법을 설하시며, 그 교묘한 수단인 방편의 힘을 어떻게 표현하시나이까.”

Bodhisattva Inexhaustible Intent said to the Buddha, "World-Honored One, Bodhisattva Perceiver of the World's Sounds-- how does he come and go in this saha world? How does he preach the Law for the sake of living beings? How does the power of expedient means apply in this case?"

 

佛故無盡意菩薩 善男子 若有國土衆生 應以佛身 得度者 觀世音菩薩 卽現佛身 而爲說法 應以辟支佛身 得度者 卽現辟支佛身 而爲說法 應以聲聞身 得度者 卽現聲聞身 而爲說法 應以梵王身 得度者 卽現梵王身 而爲說法 應以帝釋身 得度者 卽現帝釋身 而爲說法 應以自在天身 得度者 卽現自在天身 而爲說法 應以大自在天身 得度者 卽現大自在天身 而爲說法

부처님께서 무진의보살의 물음에 대하여 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다.

“소질이 훌륭한 남자여, 그 나라의 중생가운데에, 부처님의 몸이 되어 깨달음을 얻게 함이 알맞은 사람에게는 관세음보살이 곧 부처님의 모습으로 나타나서 법을 설하며, 연각(벽지불)의 몸을 가지고 깨달음을 얻게 함이 적당한 사람에게는 연각의 몸으로 나타나서 법을 설하고, 성문의 몸을 가지고 깨달음을 얻도록 함이 좋다고 생각되는 사람에게는 성문의 몸이 되어 나타나서 법을 설하느니라.

또 범천왕의 몸이 되어 구제할 이에게는 범천왕의 모습으로 나타나 법을 설하고, 제석천의 몸이 되어 구제하여야 할 이에게는 제석천의 몸으로 출현하여 법을 설하며, 자재천의 몸이 되어 구제함이 마땅한 이에게는 자재천의 모습으로 출현하여 법을 설하며, 대자재천의 몸으로서 제도함이 적당한 이에게는 대자재천의 몸으로 나타나서 법을 설하며,

The Buddha said to Bodhisattva Inexhaustible Intent: "Good man, if there are living beings in the land who need someone in the body of a Buddha in order to be saved, Bodhisattva Perceiver of the World's Sounds immediately manifests himself in a Buddha body and preaches the Law for them. If they need someone in a pratyekabuddha's body in order to be saved, immediately he manifests a pratyekabuddha's body and preaches the Law to them. If the need a voice-hearer to be saved, immediately he becomes a voice-hearer and preaches the Law for them. If they need King Brahma to be saved, immediately he becomes King Brahma and preaches the Law for them. If they need the lord Shakra to be saved, immediately he becomes the lord Shakra and preaches the Law for them. If they need the heavenly being Freedom to be saved, immediately he becomes the heavenly being Freedom and preaches the Law for them.

 

應以天大將軍身 得度者 卽現天大將軍身 而爲說法 應以毘沙門身 得度者 現毘沙門身 而爲說法

應以小王身 得度者 卽現小王身 而爲說法 應以長者身 得度者 卽現長者身 而爲說法 應以居士身 得度者 卽現居士身 而爲說法 應以宰官身 得度者 卽現宰官身 而爲說法

천대장군(天大將軍)의 몸을 가지고 구제함이 좋다고 생각되는 사람에게는 천대장군의 몸으로 나타나서 법을 설하고, 비사문천(毘沙門天)의 몸으로서 제도할 이에게는 비사문천의 몸을 나타내어 법을 설하느니라.

또 소왕(小王)의 몸을 가지고 구제함이 알맞은 사람에게는 소왕의 몸으로 나타나 법을 설하고, 부자인 장자의 몸의 모습을 취해 구제함이 적당한 이에게는 장자의 모습으로 나타나 법을 설하며, 속가(俗家)의 지식인(知識人)인 거사의 몸으로 구제함이 적합한 상대에게는 곧 거사의 몸으로 나타나 법을 설하고, 관리의 몸으로 제도할 이에게는 곧 관리의 모습으로 나타나 법을 설하며,

If they need a great general of heaven to be saved, immediately he becomes a great general of heaven and preaches the Law for them. If they need Vaishravana to be saved, immediately he becomes Vaishravana and preaches the Law for them. If they need a petty king to be saved, immediately he becomes a petty king and preaches the law for them.

If they need a rich man to be saved, immediately he becomes a rich man and preaches the Law for them. If they need a householder to be saved, immediately he becomes a householder and preaches the Law for them. If they need a chief minister to be saved, immediately he becomes a chief minister and preaches the Law for them.

 

應以婆羅門身 得度者 卽現婆羅門身 而爲說法 應以比丘比丘尼 優婆塞優婆夷身 得度者 卽現比丘比丘尼 優婆塞優婆夷身 而爲說法 應以長者居士宰官婆羅門婦女身 得度者 卽現婦女身 而爲說法 應以童男童女身 得度者 卽現童男童女身 而爲說法 應以天龍 夜叉 乾闥婆 阿修羅 迦樓羅 緊那羅 摩睺羅伽 人非人等身 得度者 卽皆現之 而爲說法 應以執金剛神 得度者 卽現執金剛神 而爲說法

바라문의 모습을 취해 구제함이 알맞은 이에게는 바라문의 모습으로 나타나 법을 설하고, 출가 수행자인 비구와 비구니, 그리고 재가 수행자인 우바새우바이의 몸이 되어 제도함이 적합한 이에게는 각각 그들에게 알맞은 모습으로 나타나서 법을 설하느니라.

장자나 거사관리, 바라문의 부녀의 몸이 되어 구제함이 알맞은 상대에게는 각각 그 부녀의 몸을 나타내어 법을 설하기도 하며, 사내아이나 여자아이의 모습으로서 구제할 상대에게는 각각 그들에게 알맞은 사내아이와 여자아이의 모습이 되어 법을 설하고, 하늘용야차건달바아수라가루라긴나라마후라가, 사람인 듯 아닌 듯한 것의 몸을 가지고 제도할 상대방에게는, 각각 그 몸으로 나타나 법을 설하며, 불법의 수호자인 금강역사, 즉 집금강신(執金剛神)의 몸이 되어 구제할 이에게는 곧 집금강신의 몸을 나타내어 법을 설하느니라.

If they need a Brahman to be saved, immediately he becomes a Brahman and preaches the Law for them. If they need a monk, a nun, a layman believer, or a laywoman believer and preaches the Law for them. If they need the wife of a rich man, of a householder, a chief minister, or a Brahman to be saved, immediately he becomes those wives and preaches the Law for them. If they need a young boy or a young girl and preaches the Law for them. If they need a heavenly being, a dragon, a yaksha, a gandharva, an asura, a garuda, a kimnara, a mahoraga, a human or a nonhuman being to be saved, immediately he becomes all of these and preaches the Law for them. If they need a vajra-bearing god and preaches the Law for them.

 

無盡意 是觀世音菩薩 成就如是功德 以種種形 遊諸國土 度脫衆生 是故 汝等 應當一心 供養觀世音菩薩 是觀世音菩薩摩訶薩 於怖畏急難之中 能施無畏 是故 此娑婆世界 皆號之爲施無畏者

무진의여, 관세음보살은 이러한 공덕을 성취하고 있기 때문에 가지가지의 모습으로 변화하여, 어떠한 곳에도 자유자재로 출현하사 중생을 해탈로 인도하나니, 그대들은 일심으로 관세음보살을 공양하지 않으면 아니 되느니라.

이 관세음보살마하살은 두려운 위기나 곤란에 처한 중생에게 동요치 않는 정신력을 베풀어주시기 때문에 이 사바세계에서는 모두 관세음보살을 두려움을 없게 해주는 이[施無畏者]라고 부르느니라."

"Inexhaustible Intent, this Bodhisattva Perceiver of the World's Sounds has succeeded in acquiring benefits such as these and. Taking on a variety of different forms, goes about among the lands saving living beings. For this reason you and the others should single-mindedly offer alms to Bodhisattva Perceiver of the World's Sounds can bestow fearlessness on those who are in fearful, pressing or difficult circumstances. That is why in this saha world everyone calls him Bestower of Fearlessness."

 

無盡意菩薩 白佛言 世尊 我今 當供養觀世音菩薩 卽解頸衆寶珠瓔珞 價直百千兩金 而以與之 作是言 仁者 受此法施珍寶瓔珞

이 말씀을 듣고 감격한 무진의보살이 부처님께 여쭈었습니다.

“세존이시여, 제가 지금 관세음보살을 공양하겠나이다.” 하고 목에 걸었던 백천 냥이나 되는, 많은 보석을 꿴 목걸이를 풀러 관세음보살에게 바치며,

“어지신 이여, 법에 대한 보시로서 드리는 이 진귀한 보배 목걸이를 받아 주십시오.” 하고 여쭈었습니다.

"Bodhisattva Inexhaustible Intent said to the Buddha, "World-Honored One, now I must offer alms to Bodhisattva Perceiver of the World's Sounds."

Then he took from his neck a necklace adorned with numerous precious gems, worth a hundred or a thousand taels of gold, and presented it to [the bodhisattva], saying, "Sir, please accept this necklace of precious gems as a gift in the Dharma."

 

時 觀世音菩薩 不肯受之 無盡意 復白觀世音菩薩言 仁者 愍我等故 受此瓔珞

그러나 관세음보살은 그것을 받으려 하지 않으니, 무진의보살이 거듭 관세음보살에게 여쭈었습니다.

“어지신 이여, 저희들을 불쌍히 여기시어 이 목걸이를 받아주십시오.”

At that time Bodhisattva Perceiver of the World's Sounds was unwilling to accept the gift.

Inexhaustible Intent spoke once more to Bodhisattva Perceiver of the World's Sounds, saying, "Sir, out of compassion for us, please accept this necklace."

 

爾時 佛告觀世音菩薩 當愍此無盡意菩薩 及四衆 天龍 夜叉 乾闥婆 阿修羅 迦樓羅 緊那羅 摩睺羅伽 人非人等故 受是瓔珞

그때, 부처님께서 관세음보살에게 말씀하셨습니다.

“이 무진의보살과 출가 재가의 사부 대중을 비롯하여, 하늘용야차건달바아수라가루라긴나라마후라가, 사람인 듯 아닌 듯한 것들을 불쌍히 여겨 그 영락을 받도록 하라.”

Then the Buddha said to Bodhisattva Perceiver of the World's Sounds, "Out of compassion for this Bodhisattva Inexhaustible Intent and for the four kinds of believers, the heavenly kings, dragons, yakshas, gandharvas, asuras, garudas, kimnaras, mahoragas, human and nonhuman beings, you should accept this necklace."

 

卽是 觀世音菩薩 愍諸四衆 及於天龍 人非人等 受其瓔珞 分作二分 一分 奉釋迦牟尼佛 一分 奉多寶佛塔

이 말씀을 들은 관세음보살이 곧, 사부대중과 하늘용 그리고 사람인 듯 아닌 듯한 것들의 마음을 헤아려서 그 목걸이를 받았지만, 받는 즉시 바로 그 목걸이를 둘로 나누어, 반쪽은 석가모니불에게 또 반은 다보불에게 바치는 것이었습니다.

Thereupon Bodhisattva Perceiver of the World's Sounds, having compassion for the four kinds of believers and the heavenly beings, dragons, human and nonhuman beings and the others, accepted the necklace and, dividing it into two parts, presented one part to Shakyamuni Buddha and presented the other to the tower of the Buddha Many Treasures.

 

無盡意 觀世音菩薩 有如是自在神力 遊於娑婆世界

그러자, 부처님께서는 무진의보살에게 말씀하시기를,

“무진의여, 이로써 관세음보살이 어찌하여 그와 같은 신통력을 가지고 자유자재로 사바세계에 나타나서 많은 중생을 구제하는가 하는 그 까닭을 알았을 것이니라.” 하셨습니다.

[The Buddha said,] "Inexhaustible Intent, these are the kinds of freely exercised supernatural powers that Bodhisattva Perceiver of the World's Sounds displays in his comings and goings in the saha world."

 

爾時 無盡意菩薩 以偈問曰

그때, 무진의보살이 시송으로 여쭈었습니다.

At that time Bodhisattva Inexhaustible Intent posed this question in verse form:

 

世尊妙相具 我今重問彼 佛子何因緣 名爲觀世音

『절묘한 모습을 갖추신 세존이시여, 거듭 그 일을 묻자옵니다.

그 불자는 무슨 사연이 있어 관세음이라고 이름 붙여졌나이까.』

World-Honored One replete with wonderful features,

I now ask you once again

for what reason that Buddha's son

is named Bodhisattva Perceiver of the World's Sounds?

 

具足妙相尊 偈答無盡意 汝聽觀音行 善應諸方所

서른 두 모습[三十二相] 구족하신 세존께서 시송으로 무진의에게 말씀하시되,

『곳곳마다 알맞게 나타나 중생을 구제하는 관음의 서원과 실행력을 들으라.

The honored One endowed with wonderful features

replied to Inexhaustible Intent in verse:

Listen to the actions of the Perceiver of Sounds,

how aptly he responds in various quarters.

 

弘誓深如海 歷劫不思議 侍多千億佛 發大淸淨願

그 서원은 큰 바다와 같아, 오랜 겁 지나도 헤아리지 못하노라.

몇 천억의 부처님 섬겨 가르침 받고, 그 청정한 서원 세웠으니

His vast oath is deep as the ocean;

kalpas pass but it remains unfathomable.

He has attended many thousands and millions of Buddhas,

setting forth his great pure vow.

 

我爲汝略說 聞名及見身 心念不空過 能滅諸有苦

내 그대 위해 간략히 말하라니, 이름을 듣거나 그 몸을 보고, 항상 마음에 간직하고 잊지 아니하면, 인생의 여러 괴로움 면할 수 있으리라.

I will describe him in outline for you-

listen to his name, observe his body,

bear him in mind, not passing the time vainly,

for he can wipe out the pains of existence.

 

假使興害意 推落大火坑 念彼觀音力 火坑變成池

가령, 해치려 하는 마음 일으켜 큰 불구덩이에 떠밀려 떨어진다 해도 관세음의 구제력을 일심으로 생각하면, 불구덩이 변하여 연못이 될 것이며,

Suppose someone should conceive a wish to harm you,

should push you into a great pit of fire.

Think on the power of that Perceiver of Sounds

and the pit of fire will change into a pond!

 

或漂流巨海 龍魚諸鬼難 念彼觀音力 波浪不能沒

큰 바다에 표류되어서 용물고기, 여러 귀신에게 잡혀 먹는 난을 만나도 저 관세음의 힘을 생각한다면, 사나운 큰 물결도 삼킬 수 없을 것이며,

If you should be cast adrift on the vast ocean,

menaced by dragons, fish and various demons,

think on the power of that Perceiver of Sounds

and the billows and waves cannot drown you!

 

或在須彌峰 爲人所推墮 念彼觀音力 如日虛空住

수미산 봉우리에서 사람에게 떠밀려 떨어질지라도 저 관세음의 힘을 염한다면 태양처럼 허공에 머물 것이며,

Suppose you are on the peak of Mount Sumeru

and someone pushes you off.

Think on the power of that Perceiver of Sounds

and you will hang in midair like the sun!

 

或被惡人逐 墮落金剛山 念彼觀音力 不能損一毛

악인에게 쫒기어 금강산에서 굴러 떨어진다 해도 관세음 염하는 그 힘으로 털 끝 하나 다치지 않으며,

Suppose you are pursued by evil men

who wish to throw you down from a diamond mountain.

Think on the power of that Perceiver of Sounds

and they cannot harm a hair of you!

 

或値怨賊繞 各執刀加害 念彼觀音力 咸卽起慈心

흉악한 도적 떼가 둘러싸고 칼을 뽑아 해치려고 해도 관세음 염하는 그 힘으로 도적들은 마음 돌려 자비로운 마음 다시 일으키며,

Suppose you are surrounded by evil-hearted bandits,

each brandishing a knife to wound you.

Think on the power of that Perceiver of Sounds

and at once all will be swayed by compassion!

 

或遭王難苦 臨刑欲壽終 念彼觀音力 刀尋段段壞

포악한 임금에게 핍박받아 형벌로 목숨 잃으려 할 때에도 관세음 염하는 그 힘으로 내리치려는 그 칼도 조각조각 동강나고,

Suppose you encounter trouble with the king's law,

face punishment, about to forfeit your life.

Think on the power of that Perceiver of Sounds

and the executioner's sword will be broken to bits!

 

或囚禁枷鎖 手足被杻械 念彼觀音力 釋然得解脫

감옥 속에 갇혀서 손발이 형틀에 묶였더라도 관세음 염하는 그 힘으로 그 속박에서 자연히 풀려나며,

Suppose you are imprisoned in cangue and lock,

hands and feet bound by fetters and chains.

Think on the power of that Perceiver of Sounds

and they will fall off, leaving you free!

 

呪詛諸毒藥 所欲害身者 念彼觀音力 還着於本人

저주나 여러 독약으로 몸을 해치려고 할 때도 관세음 염하는 그 힘으로 도리어 그 본인에게 그 화가 돌아가며,

Suppose with curses and various poisonous herbs

someone should try to injure you.

Think on the power of that Perceiver of Sounds

and the injury will rebound upon the originator.

 

或遇惡羅刹 毒龍諸鬼等 念彼觀音力 時悉不敢害

흉악한 나찰이나 독을 가진 용이며, 여러 귀신 만날지라도 관세음 염하는 그 힘으로 그들로부터 해를 받지 않을 것이며,

Suppose you encounter evil raksasas,

poison dragons and various demons.

Think on the power of that Perceiver of Sounds

and then none of them will dare to harm you.

 

若惡獸圍繞 利牙爪可怖 念彼觀音力 疾走無邊方

사나운 짐승이 둘러싸, 칼날 같은 이빨과 발톱으로 무섭게 달려들어도 관세음 염하는 그 힘으로 속히 저 멀리 뿔뿔이 달아나며,

If evil beasts should encircle you,

their sharp fangs and claws inspiring terror,

think on the power of that Perceiver of sounds

and they will scamper away in boundless retreat.

 

蚖蛇及蝮蝎 氣毒煙火燃 念彼觀音力 尋聲自廻去

뱀 살모사 전갈 등이 연기 같은 독기를 뿜더라도 관세음 염하는 그 힘으로 그 소리 듣자마자 스스로 돌아가며,

If lizards, snakes, vipers, scorpions

threaten you with poison breath that sears like flame,

think on the power of that Perceiver of Sounds

and, hearing your voice, they will flee of themselves.

 

雲雷鼓掣電 降雹澍大雨 念彼觀音力 應時得消散

구름이 몰려와 천둥 번개 치고 우박과 큰 비 쏟아져도 관세음 염하는 힘으로 곧 사라져 버릴 것이니라.

If clouds should bring thunder, and lightning strike,

if hail pelts or drenching rain comes down,

think on the power of that Perceiver of Sounds

and at that moment they will vanish away.

 

衆生被困厄 無量苦逼身 觀音妙智力 能救世間苦

뭇 중생이 많은 고난 만나 한량없는 괴로움 받을지라도 관세음의 미묘한 지혜의 힘이 능히 세상 고통 구제할 것이니라.

If living beings encounter weariness or peril,

immeasurable suffering pressing them down,

the power of the Perceiver of Sounds' wonderful wisdom

can save them from the sufferings of the world.

 

具足神通力 廣修智方便 十方諸國土 無刹不現身

種種諸惡趣 地獄鬼畜生 生老病死苦 以漸悉令滅

신통한 힘 구족하고 어떤 경우에도 꼭 맞는 지혜의 힘 몸에 익혀 시방의 여러 국토 몸을 나타내지 않는 곳 없나니, 가지가지 악한 갈래, 지옥 아귀 축생계에 있는 이의 생노병사, 모든 고통 점차로 없애 준다.

He is endowed with transcendental powers

and widely practices the expedient means of wisdom.

Throughout the lands in the ten directions

there is no region where he does not manifest himself.

In many different kinds of evil circumstances,

in the realms of hell, hungry spirits or beasts,

the sufferings of birth, old age, sickness and death--

all these he bit by bit wipes out.

 

眞觀淸淨觀 廣大智慧觀 悲觀及慈觀 常願常瞻仰

진실로 꿰뚫어 보는 눈과 미혹이 없는 맑고 깨끗한 눈이며, 우주 만물을 자기와 일체로 보는 넓고 큰 지혜의 눈을 가지고, 온갖 괴로움에서 몸부림치는 중생을 구제해야겠다는 아름다운 눈을 가지고 있으며, 일체 중생을 행복하게 해주겠다는 자비에 가득찬 눈을 가지고 있으므로, 항상 우러러보아야 하느니라.

He of the true gaze, the pure gaze,

the gaze of great and encompassing wisdom,

the gaze of pity, the gaze of compassion--

constantly we implore him, constantly look up in reverence.

 

無垢淸淨光 慧日破諸闇 能伏災風火 普明照世間

때 없이 청정한 빛을 발하니, 그 지혜 햇빛처럼 모든 미혹 깨뜨리며 바람과 불의 재앙 모두 다 쳐부수어 널리 온 세상을 밝게 비추느니라.

His pure light, free of blemish,

is a sun of wisdom dispelling all darkness's.

He can quell the wind and fire of misfortune

and everywhere bring light to the world.

 

悲體戒雷震 慈意妙大雲 澍甘露法雨 滅除煩惱焰

그가 설하는 계율은 자비에 바탕을 두어 천둥소리 진동하는 듯 하고, 자비의 마음은 큰 구름이라 감로처럼 더 없는 맛이 담긴 가르침의 비 뿌려서 번뇌의 불길 멸해주며,

The precepts from his compassionate body shake us

like thunder,

the wonder of his pitying mind is like a great cloud.

He sends down the sweet dew, the Dharma rain,

to quench the flames of earthly desires.

 

諍訟經官處 怖畏軍陣中 念彼觀音力 衆怨悉退散

다툼 벌여 관청에 가서 재판 받거나 두려운 진중(陣中)에 있을지라도 관세음 염하는 그 힘으로 그 꺼림찍한 일 다 물러가고 말리라.

When law suits bring you before the officials,

when terrified in the midst of an army,

think on the power of that Perceiver of Sounds

and hatred in all its forms will be dispelled.

 

妙音觀世音 梵音海潮音 勝彼世間音 是故須常念

더 없이 묘한 소리와 세상의 소원 분별하고 듣는 분이며, 맑은 소리 파도소리처럼 스며드는 가르침, 저 미혹과 괴로움을 정복하는 것이므로 항상 마음에 간직하여야 하느니,

Wonderful sound, Perceiver of the World's Sounds,

Brahma's sound, the sea tide sound--

they surpass those sounds of the world;

therefore you should constantly think on them

from thought to thought never entertaining doubt!

 

念念勿生疑 觀世音淨聖 於苦惱死厄 能爲作依

관세음은 청정하고 성스러운 분이니 잠깐만이라도 의심하지 말아라. 고뇌와 죽음의 곤액을 만나더라도 능히 믿고 의지할 대상이니라.

Perceiver of the World's Sounds, pure sage--

to those in suffering, in danger of death,

he can offer aid and support.

 

具一切功德 慈眼視衆生 福聚海無量 是故應頂禮

일체의 공덕을 두루 갖추고 자비의 눈으로 중생을 굽어보며 그 복이 바다처럼 한량없으니, 그러므로 마음으로부터 예배하여야 하느니라.』

Endowed with all benefits,

he views living beings with compassionate eyes.

The sea of his accumulated blessings is immeasurable;

therefore you should bow your head to him!

 

爾時 持地菩薩 卽從座起 前白佛言 世尊 若有衆生 聞是觀世音菩門品 自在之業 普門示現神通力者 當知是人 功德 不少

그때, 이 설법을 듣고 감동한 지지보살(持地菩薩), 즉 지장보살이, 자리에서 일어나 부처님 앞에 나아가 여쭈었습니다.

“세존이시여, 어떤 중생일지라도 이 관세음보살의 중생 제도를 위한 자유자재한 활동과 상대에 따라 여러 가지의 모습으로 변하며 모든 곳에 출현하는 신통력을 듣고 알게 된 사람은 적지 않은 공덕을 얻을 수 있겠나이다.”

At that time the Bodhisattva Earth Holder immediately rose from his seat, advanced, and said to the Buddha, "World-Honored One, if there are living beings who hear this chapter on Bodhisattva Perceiver of the World's Sounds, on the freedom of his actions, his manifestation of a universal gateway, and his transcendental powers, it should be known that the benefits these persons gain are not few!"

 

佛說是普門品時 衆中八萬四千衆生 皆發無等等阿耨多羅三藐三菩提心

부처님께서 이 보문품을 설하실 때, 듣고 있던 대중 가운데 팔만 사천의 중생이 모두 비할 바 없이 거룩한, 그리고 그 누구에게도 평등한 길이 열려 있는 부처님의 지혜를 얻고자 하는 마음을 일으켰습니다.

When the Buddha preached this chapter on the Universal Gateway, a multitude of eighty-four thousand persons in the assembly all conceived a determination to attain the unparalleled state of anuttara-samyak-sambodhi.
